Study Abroad Ambassador

Following my study abroad semester, I applied to become a study abroad ambassador at TRU. This opportunity has allowed me to share with students my experiences abroad and enthusiasm for the study abroad program. We are considered peer mentors on campus that is not merely a club, but a part of TRU World's team in promoting, organizing, and leading Study Abroad to become a well-rounded program. We explain to students how studying abroad benefits them, how to apply, discovering where to go, and what to consider while abroad. This work experience for me is particularly rewarding as I can encourage students to go on similar adventures I once had. We also help students overcome their fears of studying abroad, and guide them in acting responsible and making smart choices while abroad.

The various tasks and responsibilities include:

  • Promoting the Study Abroad Program to students through classroom visits, information sessions, peer-to-peer engagement, and through social media

  • Explaining to students the benefits of study abroad and how to apply

  • Planning and co-ordinating Study Abroad events including promotional booths, and fundraising events

  • Organizing Study Abroad activities throughout the semester including information session dates and Study Abroad Support Sessions (SASS)

  • Attending SASS to assist students with their application or answering questions about studying in a new country

  • Reporting to management on Study Abroad activities including reports on information sessions, SASS, and Study Abroad events

  • As a member of the Organization and Planning Team, this involves co-ordinating activities among team members; record hours; plan dates for events, information sessions, and meetings; and providing administrative support and feedback for the manager

One of the most important tasks of being a study abroad ambassador includes creating a large project called the "giveback project" for the Study Abroad program. This involves discussing with the team on what can be improved, or what does the Study Abroad office need to help students. The project does need to be approved by management, but is a decision led by the ambassadors. Our team chose to create the "Study Abroad Survival Guide" which acts as a centralized document for students to help stay organized. The document contains information for students such as what to consider while abroad, contact information, what to pack, and fill-in-the-blank sections for students to help keep track of their activities. It is divided into three main sections: Before You Go, What to Consider While Abroad, and Preparing to Return Home. Attached below is the completed document:

Becoming a study abroad ambassador was an extremly rewarding opportunity. This helped me gain and improve upon skills vital to any career. One of the biggest impacts being an ambassador had on me was overcoming a fear of public speaking. This work opportunity prompted me to overcome this fear and learn how to be a better public speaker and leader. The team I worked with has been amazing, and each of us excel in our own way. Being an ambassador has also made me feel nostalgia when talking to students on why they should study abroad or helping them decide where they want to go. It has been translating how studying abroad has affected me personally, into generating that excitement in other students while helping them to prepare to embark on their on journey.
